Uncle Flo is Mona's uncle. His friends testify to his gentleness, intelligence, and kindness. Although he is happy with his friends, relatives, business, and books, Uncle Flo is unhappy about his "differentness" that has kept him from love as well as piano-playing. At a height of four-feet six-inches with short fingers and a short body, he has not been able to grasp either women or pianos. Mona empathizes with Uncle Flo's melancholy, but she is initially unable to accept the attractive and romantic fantasy world that he has invented for compensation.
