How does Jacqueline Woodson use imagery in Feathers?

In Chapter Nine, Frannie wishes she could take her mother's pain away and, in fact, everyone's pain. She has mentioned before that the pock marks in her palms could be mistaken for nail holes. The imagery is an allusion to Jesus Christ who had real nail holes in his hands and had the power to heal. Frannie is searching for help beyond herself.
