The investigations outlined in the book take on a scholarly, academic, and discursive tone and display an astonishing familiarity not only with classical philosophy, but also scripture, Western literature, and Greek mythology. Unlike most philosophical texts, however, de Silentio’s prose is playful, ironic, and at times sardonically sarcastic and satirical. This is characteristic of Kierkegaard’s authorial voice not only as a thinker, but, especially, as a writer.
