Because it is written under the conditions of pseudonymity, the precise perspective of both the text and its author are difficult to determine and must therefore be left up to the individual reader. The text itself is written by Kierkegaard under the name Johannes de Silentio, which literally means “John of the Silence,” no doubt a reference to the interpretation of Abraham put forward in Problema II and Problema III. The pseudonym provides Kierkegaard with some distance from the text, however it is highly unlikely that the text was received as such, given his status as a well-known philosopher in Copenhagen at the time. Kierkegaard often wrote under pseudonyms as a means of engaging in what he often called “indirect communication.”
