What tragedy befalls the Everdene Farm in Chapter 21?

After Bathsheba has fired Gabriel, less than 24 hours pass before tragedy arises. With no one watching the sheep, they’ve jumped a fence and gotten into a field of young clover, which apparently leads to bloat and death. Gabriel is the only one who can save them.
