Sergeant Troy asks Jan Coggan if anyone in Boldwood’s family has been crazy and Jan replies he had an uncle who was disturbed but he never knew the story of it. This foreshadows the later revelations of Boldwood’s mental instability and his obsession with Bathsheba.
