When Gabriel first sees Bathsheba, it is in the woods near his farm. Bathsheba is riding in a horse-drawn carriage and is going to stay with her aunt, Mrs. Hurst. Gabriel is struck by Bathsheba’s beauty and watches her as she admires herself in a mirror.
