How does the author use foreshadowing in Family Ties?

Using the techniques of foreshadowing, Lispector gives the character of Tony a cold so that he cannot communicate properly with the departing Severina. Tony's coughing and blowing his nose also prevents his stopping Catherine from leaving the house with their son at the end of the story.
