Davydd ap Llewelyn was Llewelyn Fawr's only legitimate son. He was named his father's sole heir when he was a mere teenager and always expected to become the Prince of Wales. Davydd was, in fact, the first man ever called Prince of Wales. After Llewelyn Fawr's death, Davydd was forced to make peace with England in order to focus on a civil war with his brother Gruffydd. To keep his brother from tearing Wales apart, he tricked him into a meeting, drugged him, and took him prisoner. Gruffydd's wife used the king of England to get back at Davydd, so when he was forced to surrendering, Davydd gave Gruffydd to the English King as a prisoner. Davydd later died of cancer without an heir.
