The book is written from the perspective of Eve Rodsky, the creator of the Fair Play method. However, the limited perspective is countered by her interviews with other people. Eve mostly paraphrases the interviews. Occasionally, she chooses to quote the exact words of the person. The author set out to conduct this research and these interviews with the express purpose of writing this book, meaning she was likely taking notes toward that end. Most readers will accept as fact her version of the events other people described.

Eve gives no reason for the reader to doubt her personal stories as well, which makes her a reliable narrator. She often casts her husband, Seth, in a poor light. However, she also relates situations in which he rose to the challenge of being a collaborative partner in their home life.
