The main conflict surrounds the state mandated destruction of books. Guy Montag, the protagonist, has a spiritual and intellectual awakening. As a fireman he is responsible for burning books but after his awakening, he seeks to preserve books. Eventually he wants to tear society apart so it can begin again.
