Captain Beatty is the captain of the squad to which Montag belongs. He is a mouthpiece for and embodimen of the thought- denying, soul-denying, individuality-denying rules of the society of the time. At first glance, Beatty appears to be a reasonable and thoughtful man, but as the tension between what Montag and Beatty rises (Beatty warns Montag about breaking the law.... reading books), Beatty's reactions become more aggressive, even crazy.
