Martha Beck, the author of this memoir, tells a story that happened to her and is highly personal. Ms. Beck's perspective, therefore, is highly subjective. The story focuses on a time in which Ms. Beck was expecting her second child who turned out to have Down syndrome. During that pregnancy, Ms. Beck experienced many unexplained phenomena that she explains away by saying that Adam himself was the focus of a spiritual world most people never know, let alone see in action.
