What is the importance of Kauai, Hawaii in the novel, Everything We Left Behind?

James doesn't feel like he belongs in California, so he takes his boys to stay with their Aunt Natalya in Kauai, Hawaii. At the end of the novel, he decides to stay in Hawaii with his aunt.
