Who is wife?

In the story “In the Old Days,” the wife of the narrator’s father was born in Haiti, just like the narrator’s father and mother. When the narrator’s father appears to be deathly ill, his wife calls the narrator and asks her to come to Miami to see her father before he dies. Unfortunately, he dies before the narrator can arrive. The wife delays the official pronouncement of death until after the narrator sees her father’s body.
