Kate calls Christmas cards, "prosperity gospels writ miniature" (20). With their annual images and reminders of happy families who share the successes of the previous year, they become symbolic of both the prosperity gospel and the American Dream. These cards, with their idealized family portraits and curated narratives, are indicative of how people highlight and present their happiness and success to the outside world as evidence of their hard work and success, and/or as evidence of their fair and just divine rewards.
