How does Carla see through Madeline's deception in “Everything’s a Risk”?

Carla observes that Madeline's behavior has changed and when she sees Madeline laughing at something on her computer she asks what it is. Madeline lies and says it is a cat video and then lies and says the cat dies when Carla comes over to see. Carla laughs at Madeline's bad attempt at lying.
