The novel is presented in the first-person narrative voice of Ada as she changes and grows within her environment. Throughout the novel, however, the reader is brought back and forth through time to various moments in Ada’s life, allowing the novel to be written in an un-chronological order of events. Through this narrative, the narrative tone, verbiage, and language changes when Ada is narrating her experiences at various moments in time to accommodate her character’s age and linguistic capacity at that present moment. For example, the narration reads, “what I hear is that Jesus loves me and how we all know this because the bible tells us so and I know that is good I know that it’s good we’re going off of what the bible says more than anything Dad said we needed to find a home where they teach the Word of God” (51).
