In Chapter Seven, Esperanza learns about Marta's background. Marta attempts to rally those attending the party to strike for higher wages and better rights because their role as workers is so insecure. Esperanza doesn't fully grasp the political inequality that she is now living in, but she does begin to understand Marta's perspective.
