Why do they end up having to row through the opening? Why was this difficult?

On April 9, the Patience Camp ice flow cracks up and begins to disintegrate. The ship's boats are then launched, loaded, and manned. Rowing through the opening was difficult because as the men rowed toward the open water, the pack ice swirled
around them.
