Austen's book, Emma, is set during the Regency period (early 1800's) in England. The main home, Hartfield, is where Emma lives. The town that is the closest to the manor is called Highbury, and it is where most of their aquaintances live. Hartfield is a guilded cocoon of sorts, though, as Emma has never gone more than a few hour's ride from it, and has no aspirations to ever go further.
