In Emma, by Austen, the theme of class is explored. This is illustrated by Emma and her inability to view people without a class distinction. When she invites people to the home, she categorizes them into two types...those who are her social equals (and there aren't many of those), and those 'friends' who were less respectable. She invites the second variety to the house because it seems to make her father happy (who does not share her class distinction beliefs).
