Who is Sir William Cecil from Elizabeth I and what is their importance?

Sir William Cecil was Elizabeth's Principal Secretary of State. Born in 1520, Cecil was the son of a minor official in Henry VIII's Court. He was educated at Stamford Grammar School and St. John's College, Cambridge. Cecil had served as Secretary to King Edward, and Elizabeth later elevated him to Baron Burghley. Cecil died on August 4, 1598.
