The novel, Elijah of Buxton, tells the story of Elijah Freeman, the first child to be born free in the Elgin settlement at Raleigh in Canada West near the American border. The settlement was founded by Frederick Douglass.

Over the course of the novel, Elijah's story chronicles his friendships, challenges, and his inner courage as he becomes involved in dangerous schemes. In the end, he must travel into the unknown to help his friend, Leroy, who is heading into the states to buy his family out of slavery.
