Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was the daughter of Elliot and Anna Roosevelt. The Roosevelts were wealthy, New York society members. Eleonor, describes herself as plain and even ugly. As a result, she had a difficult relationship with her mother, who was a renown beauty, who placed great importance on appearance.


Eleanor married Franklin Roosevelt, her fifth cousin, once removed. As his wife, she supported his political ambitions and even became intimately involved in the problems that faced the nation and the world. She was a strong and unrelenting voice for the poor, the weak, and the minorities. After her husband's death, she was named one of the first delegates to the UN. President Harry Truman referred to her as the First Lady of the World.
