How is Grandmother a symbolic figure in the novel, Eighth Moon?

Grandmother is symbolic of the old ways. Her feet are bound, and she has to pull herself along on a rope to get out of bed. She is a strong woman, who tells her granddaughter the truth about her family. In the end, she also helps Sansan leave China.
