Who is The Chinaman from Effi Briest and what is their importance?

The Chinaman never physically appears in the novel, but his story is alive and well. His picture is displayed on the back of a chair in Geert's home, as he was a friend and servant to the previous owner. Effi believes his ghost roams through her home.
