What strange thing happened to Alia?

Alia was exposed to the spice essence while still in her mother's womb. This caused her to become completely aware as her developing psyche was linked to that of her mother, the Reverend Mother, and all Reverend Mothers that preceded her. Alia states that even though she was still unborn, she became an old woman in that moment.
