The meeting between Irulan and the Reverend Mother is tense, to say the least. The Reverend Mother has nothing but utter contempt for the Princess Consort, and chastises her severely for her perceived failures and shortcomings. Irulan bears nothing but bad news for the Reverend Mother, and Mohiam's imprisonment causes her to be in an especially bad mood.
