Who is Father - Peter Knapp from Drinking: A Love Story and what is their importance?

Caroline's father, Peter Knapp, is a phsychiatrist. The two share a unique bond and are very close. Their bond, however, was unspoken, thus, many of the things her father could of helped her with were never revealed. Peter Knapp died after a long fight with cancer.
