David Sedaris from Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is the author and the protagonist in the collection of stories. Most of the stories focus on his childhood and young adult life growing up in New York. Later, they move to South Carolina where he learns that he is attracted to boys. His father was very much the traditionalist and would not accept his son. They would remain estranged for the rest of their lives. His mother had a drinking problem. His parents did not expect much of him and he lived up to those low expectations for many years until he realized that he had a talent for writing. This allowed him to begin to live the kind of life that allowed him to be who he was. He later moves to Paris to live with his life partner, Hugh.
