The memoir is a nonfiction account that is told mostly in first person but also includes some moments when Obama uses third person or the voices of others to fill in details about events in which he played no part. In keeping with the genre of the work, Obama's presents himself as a reliable narrator who is able to speak with some authority about the events of his own life, including factual details related to the chronology of his life.
