In Chapter Four, Clarence introduces himself to William and invites him to join he and Adeline for a drink. Adeline explains that they are “childhood acquaintances” (20) but William becomes agitated, urging Adeline not to let Clarence touch her. He then takes a swing at Clarence. William is drunk and Clarence easily dodges, shoving William away. William falls and breaks his arm. Cletus begins yelling
about Clarence attacking William and then runs out of the speakeasy. Clarence leaves, and the bartender orders William to leave and never return.
