Peer pressure is a metaphor through the book. Caitlin tends to give in to peer pressure whenever it is applied. What is interesting about her tendency to give in is that she realizes she is doing it and does it anyway. She is conscious of the fact that she is making a decision and that it is being prompted by peer pressure but does not fight it. The first instance of this is seen when Caitlin goes out for cheerleading at the prompting of Rina. Caitlin does not want to be a cheerleader and tells Rina that, but Rina insists and Caitlin gives in.
