Who is Claire Randall (Fraser) from Dragonfly in Amber and what is their importance?

Claire Randall is the novel's protagoinst and central character. When we first meet Claire, she is a married nurse.... the year is 1945. Her parents were killed in an automobile accident when she was a child, thus, Claire was raised by her uncle. At a young age she took to gardening, later, studying herbs and plants for their medicinal value. On a trip to the standing stones, Claire is tranported back in time to a place her skills and knowledge will become essential. A place that she will fall in love with another man, and a place she never dreams she will return home from.... the year is 1743.
