Chaowen Stark is the deceased daughter of Hulan and David Stark. She was born healthy, and she was a great blessing to her parents. At the age of three and a half, Chaowen developed a fever, which turned quickly to bacterial meningitis. She dies shortly after, and Hulan believed herself to be to blame. Over the course of the novel, David and Hulan struggle between themselves to come to terms with the loss of their daughter. In the end, they forgive themselves and one another, and move forward.
