The language of the novel is generally simple, although at times formal in nature due to the assumed translation of Chinese characters used throughout the novel. Many of the characters, due to their position as archaeologists, speak very technically, using many Chinese words and phrases. Although some are explained briefly in the novel, a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and of archeology is necessary to truly comprehend the technical aspects of the novel. In addition, many of the characters are Chinese, and their tones and language tend to be different than those of foreign nationalities.
