The language of the novel is simple English that includes a great deal of slang and the occasional foreign word. Because many of the characters are uneducated, the dialogue tends to include a lot of slang as well as strange methods of punctuation. Where there is an educated character, his speech is more formal, filled with more varied vocabulary and precise grammar, contrasting nicely with the speech of the less educated. The novel also includes words that are associated with bass fishing, such as the words for the size of the bass. These words give the story a sense of authenticity that help the reader feel as though they are not just being entertained, but learning something as well.
