One major theme in the novel, Don't Stop the Carnival, is that of fantasy versus reality. This theme is explored when Paperman, who has spent his life immersed in the fantasy of Broadway entertainment, embarks of the adventure of owning a resort.... something he imagines as an idyllic enterprise, but something in which the reality doesn't match up with what Paperman imagined.
