Chapter One:

• April's life in Norwood, Virginia is described.

• She is a happy, popular, and athletic teenager with many friends and a boyfriend, Steve.

• She has a wonderful bedroom that is a teenager's paradise.

• April is introduced, and we learn that she has a stable, close family.

• April's father works for an airline, and her mother is the author of children's books.

• April's father is away testifying at a drug trial but it causes April no real worries.

Chapter Two:

• An attempt is made on April's father's (George Corrigan) life.

• The Corrigan family is told they must leave their home quickly.

• April discovers her father is really an undercover FBI agent.

• Jim Peterson, a retired policeman, joins the family to stay with them in hiding.

Chapter Three:

• The family goes to the Mayflower Hotel in Richmond, Virginia.

• April goes into another room and picks up the phone, planning to phone Steve and overhears a conversation between Max, the FBI agent, and Jim, in which she learn that the FBI has received a threatening letter against the Corrigans.

• She decides not to call Steve, and she also decides not to tell her mother about the phone conversation.

Chapter Four:

• April misses the prom and Steve's graduation.

• The verdict is squashed and they must stay in the hotel even longer.

• April sneaks out one night and mails a letter to Steve.
