A recurring idea of this novel is the reunification of the self. Reunifying the self becomes important for Russel Susskit when he begins to recognize that he is angry and uncomfortable most of the time. The lesson of the Old Way presses against Russel's subconscious in a way that makes it difficult for him to ignore what is going on inside of him. The first part of the novel deals with Russel's feelings of disconnection and confusion. As he finds his way, however, Russel comes to understand that the matter is not simply a choice between the New Way and the Old Way, but a choice between his true self and the self which is determined for him.
