A recurring idea is tied in to the concept of being different, is bullying. Many of the characters are bullied, especially when they show signs of being different. CB picks on his sister for her newfound Wiccan beliefs, and CB and Van's sister previously burned Van's blanket to teach him to let go of childhood things. A less obvious example of bullying is the way that Tricia and Marcy always make fun of Frieda, a fact that Van eventually attributes to the idea that Tricia is secretly in love with Frieda. When CB asks why Van's sister set the little red-headed girl's hair on fire, she admits that the girl was talking about whores in school the day after Van's sister had an abortion. This example makes it unclear which girl is the bully; the little red-headed girl's words are bullying while Van's sister resorts to physical bullying.
