Who was the ghost and what was his dilemma?

Ato himself is the ghost... the boy he once was, as opposed to the man he has become. In addition, the ghost symbolically represents the African culture, as Ato's dilemma can be found in his newfound identity, his education, and his American wife, and the way all of these things struggle to balance these things when he finally returns home.
