What were Esikom's intentions when she gave the gifts to Ato and Eulalie?

Esikom brings Ato and Eulalie food after they arrive from the city. She presents them with traditional food saying “So I thought I would bring you one or two things for I hear food is almost unbuyable in the city these days” (p.31)
