Throughout the novel, snow is symbolic for purity. It often serves as a contrast to deeply problematic or animalistic tendencies – for instance, the frequent juxtaposition between the pure whiteness of snow and the blood of an animal during hunting season accentuates the gravity of killing. Snowfall also accompanies new beginnings in the case of the short story North Country.
