Reacher knows there is a mole in the Chicago office, something that suggests someone close to Holly played a role in her kidnapping. The situation also implies that Borken has received information that could put Holly or Reacher in harm's way. This is confirmed when Borken cancels his plans to send Reacher to talk to the American government and begins to beat him. Borken seems to have learned
something about Reacher that he doesn't like, perhaps that Reacher killed Bell. At the same time, the mole places Jackson, the undercover agent, in danger. This
foreshadows the possible murder of either Reacher or Jackson or both.
