"Dictee" is set in the world, primarily in the Eastern Hemisphere which contains Asia, during the first half of the twentieth century. One of the specific settings in "Dictee" is Korea. Korea is occupied by Japan under the false pretense of a treaty of alliance. This creates the exile of many Koreans, forcing other portions of "Dictee" to be set in Manchuria, China and the United States of America.
