Importance of Susan's winter coat

Susan gives her winter coat to Greg following confiscation of the leather jacket at school. It is so long that it looks like a dress on Greg. Greg is forced to wear the winter coat on the way home because he has no other option to stay warm. While Greg thinks he looks ridiculous, he admits the coat is indeed keeping him warm.
