Over the course of the novel, Greg tranforms from a young, irresponsible middle-schooler into a young man who's learned to be more independent, responsible and caring. When his grandfather first moves in, Greg is adverse to the idea.... over time, he really gets to know his grandfather and appreciate everything he has to teach him. He also extablishes a closer relationship with his father.
