Describe symbolism in Desperation by Stephen King

One symbol in the novel is the "early excuse pass" David received in school. After Johnny's heroic and self-sacrificing act in saving those he loved, David found the pass in his pocket. The pass represents Johnny's sacrifice.... the sacrifice he willingly made for David.
